I usually hear it described as "Dutch sounds like an extremely drunk German trying to speak English," which feels right, but knowing English and school German I still can't make heads or tails of spokem Dutch.

Written Dutch is much easier to learn than German however, with less oddball pluralization, only two grammatical genders, and none of this noun declension nonsense.
